Name : Iaagnbol (Ee-yung-bal), translates to “hands demon hound/hellhound”
Description – horse sized beasts with dog like bodies, however their necks are made up to 3-6 arms that hold up a decapitated head. They appear to have thick, matted fur clumped with mud, twigs, and other forest debris, but some are completely nude. Their appearance slightly differs depending on their ecosystem.
Behavior and Ecology – The Iaagnbol do not need to eat or sleep, instead they wonder all corners of the Kurosian Mountains, being more populated in swampy wetlands.
Their main drive is to always have a head, and their search is very obsessive. They often go for already dead creatures, but if they cannot find one, they will attack and tare heads off living hosts. The heads they do find appear to keep the souls of the creature, their eyes stay wide open but they cannot speak of their own accord, only groan and moan with mouths gaping. The heads slowly decompose, once skeletal the soul seems to leave the head and it is discarded.
Iaagnbol wonder in small groups of 3-5. They speak to each other using the heads, or jerky hand claps when they do not possess a head. Their intelligence isn’t grand, but good enough to manipulate those with kinds hearts to get close enough to ‘help’ them, mimic victim’s cries, and develop ambush strategies. The language they do use is made up of groans, whimpers, cries and whines, no pattern. It isn’t known how they can see, smell and hear with or without a head.
Mythology – Yet another creature symbolizing the weakness of heart, and the stupidity of the over-zealous. There are countless folktales of Kuros falling victim to the Iaagnbol by wanting to help ‘a poor helpless creature crying for help’, following a single Iaagnbol to show off how brave they are only to be ambushed and killed, and many more. The Iaagnbol don’t hunt Kuros particularly and avoid most, but they are still one of the many ‘boogeymen’ among Kurosia’s landscapes.
Trivia –
- The idea of the Iaagnbol was first conceived when Imagine Dragon’s song “Demons” was released. There was a storyboard I was planning (now long cancelled), of a little girl who fell victim to a demonic stalker. At one point, the demon sends out hounds holding human heads to chase after the little girl. Not much has changed design wise from those original hellhounds, only now they roam Kurosia.
- A little inspiration comes from the Skinwalker myth where these creatures can use calls via the heads they’ve collected to lure more victims. The fresher the head, the more believable the call. “Only a desperate fool believes the call of the Iaagnbol”
